Comprehension I: Chanakya and Rakshasa

Question 1:
Who was Chandan Das? What kind of a man was he?
Answer:
Chandan Das was a dear friend of Minister Rakshasa. He was a loyal and trustworthy man who would not reveal Rakshasa’s hiding place, even if his own life was in danger.

Question 2:
What was the great task that Chanakya did?
Answer:
The great task that Chanakya accomplished was helping Chandragupta become the king of Magadha by overthrowing the Nanda dynasty.

Question 3:
Why did Chanakya want to win over Rakshasa?
Answer:
Chanakya wanted to win over Rakshasa because he was a wise and able minister. Chanakya knew that the kingdom of Magadha would be safe and prosperous under Rakshasa’s administration.

Question 4:
What plan did Chanakya hit upon to find out Rakshasa?
Answer:

“Chanakya and Rakshasa”: Summary

Class 10 3rd Language English Chapter 1 Chanakya and Rakshasa

The story is about Chandragupta, who became the king of Magadha with the help of a very clever man named Chanakya. Chanakya had almost completed his task of placing Chandragupta on the throne. The only thing left for him to do was to find a wise and able minister to help Chandragupta rule the kingdom.

Chanakya chose Rakshasa, the great minister of the Nanda kingdom, for this position. However, Rakshasa was an enemy of Chandragupta, so Chanakya had to win him over. Chanakya knew that the kingdom would be safe if Rakshasa became the minister.

Rakshasa was in hiding, and only his dear friend Chandan Das knew his whereabouts. Chandan Das was known for not revealing secrets for anything in the world.

Chanakya came up with a plan to find Rakshasa. He imprisoned Chandan Das and announced throughout the kingdom that if Rakshasa did not return within a fortnight, Chandan Das would be killed. The news of this spread quickly.

A fortnight passed, and there was no sign of Rakshasa. The next day, Chandan Das was taken to the marketplace to be executed. As the order to cut off his head was read out, the crowd waited in silence.

At that moment, a man came rushing and crying, “Stop! Stop! I am Rakshasa, whom you seek. For God’s sake, spare Chandan Das.” The people rejoiced, and Chanakya received Rakshasa with great honor.  Chanakya made him agree to be the Minister of Magadha and offered rich presents to Chandan Das before sending him home.
